Spectators and competitors enjoyed 2 days of sporting action at Kingston Regatta this month, as the annual event returned for the first time since the pandemic.

Rowing clubs from Henley to Fulham raced on the Thames in the Amateur and Borough Regattas, held on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 July.

But it was the local teams who triumphed as event organisers Kingston Rowing Club took the trophy in the 16-75 (Amateur) event.

And the Borough competition, for junior teams aged 12-15, was won by Surbiton High School team.

This achievement is even more impressive considering that a crew member lost an oar in the semi-final, as footage captured by spectator Nooman Haque shows.

Teams competed from 8.30am to 6.30pm on a course going from Canbury Gardens down to Raven's Ait.

There was plenty of room for spectators, with many making a day of it from the event base at Canbury while others sat down on the banks to watch the rowers.

As well as sporting glory, Kingston Rowing Club and Surbiton High School now have the prized Victor Ludorum trophy.

This is a 3-pint tankard perfect for a celebratory round of drinking for the adult competitors.

In fairness, the races were tightly contested and many teams won by a hair's breadth - or a https://www.britishrowing.org/upload/files/CoachingTraining/rowing-glossary.pdf [L+] a canvas [.L], as the rowers say.
