Kingston Council appoints new Director of Public Health

Kingston Council is delighted to announce the appointment of Katy Scammell as the borough's new Director of Public Health.

Scammell is a highly experienced public health leader and joins the Royal Borough of Kingston from the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, where she has been Associate Director of Public Health since 2018.

According to the council, she brings a wealth of experience in health inequalities, childhood obesity, community health and healthy places, as well as strategic leadership.

Kingston Council's Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care and Health, Cllr Sabah Hamed, welcomed Scammell to the role, saying: "I am thrilled that Katy is joining us as Kingston's new Director of Public Health.

"The extensive experience and expertise she brings to the role will help build on the fantastic work taking place across the borough as we continue to build healthier and safer communities."

On taking up her new role, Scammell said: "I'm delighted to be joining Kingston as the new Director of Public Health and am looking forward to working with residents, colleagues and partners to make the borough a healthier place for everyone. 

"The work currently taking place to make Kingston a fairer, safer and greener borough provides a fantastic foundation from which to build on, and I truly believe that working together we can make a real difference to wellbeing across Kingston."

Scammell will take up the post in April 2025.   

The Public Health team collaborates with a wide range of partners, including Public Health England, the NHS, voluntary sector and community organisations to ensure that everyone who lives, works or studies in the Royal Borough of Kingston achieves good health and wellbeing.

The team is focused on health improvement, health care and health protection and includes community development, resettlement and integration, and delivery of the Household Support Fund.
