Kingston Council have revealed the winners of a design competition to improve the area of riverside by John Lewis and Kingston Bridge.

In Autumn 2020 the Council, Kingston University, Kingston First and the charity Creative Youth secured £200,000 of funding from The Mayor of London's Getting Building Fund for public realm improvements.

The winning design (pictured above) was entered by local architects Weston Rengifo Architectural Practice (WR-AP), and Kingston Academy.

Their vision is for a vibrant and eco-friendly riverside area complete with colourful banners and columns, a green wall and platform for busking.

In a press release today Kingston Council said: "As the project starts there will be opportunities for the public, businesses and residents to engage and feed into the design.

"More information will be available on the Let's Talk Portal soon."

Sean Weston, Director of WR-AP, said: "We're delighted to be assisting with the rejuvenation of this prime riverside area.

"Our submission brought together the ideas of our practice and students from the Kingston Academy to envisage a new public space that is vibrant, welcoming and safe.

"Focused around stimulating the senses of visitors, the proposals look to improve the areas biodiversity, connectivity and usage with a number of interventions.

"We look forward to working alongside the project stakeholders in developing the concepts into reality".

Cllr John Sweeney, Portfolio Holder for Business and Leisure, added: "There were so many fantastic entries, and we are really pleased with WR-AP's winning design idea.

"The design depicts an exciting transformation of the riverside, fitting the brief of celebrating the heritage of the area.

"As these plans come into fruition, they will breathe new life into the area, creating an attractive and engaging space for our communities to enjoy.

"This is such an exciting project, and I can't wait to see the designs take shape."
