The MP for Kingston and Surbiton, Sir Ed Davey, has spoken out about US President Donald Trump's recent social media post about  postponing strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure amid his war with Iran, which was posted minutes before traders bet hundreds of millions of dollars on oil contracts.

According to some analysts, traders made these bets because they had prior knowledge of what President Trump was going to say, which is known as Insider Trading and is illegal.

Speaking about the matter, Ed Davey MP said: "Donald Trump is the most corrupt president in US history. It seems clear that he and his cronies may have used insider knowledge to line their own pockets.

"NIgel Farage and Kemi Badenoch have been his biggest cheerleaders. They supported his illegal war, which is hitting British families hard at the pump and in our energy bills. 

"The financial watchdog should investigate if anyone in the UK has profited from insider trading linked to Trump's illegal war in Iran.

At the Prime Minister's questions yesterday (Wednesday, 25 March), the Lib Dem Leader said: "Just before President Trump posted about his supposed negotiations with Iran on Monday, traders made hundreds of millions of dollars of extra bets on oil futures. "

He added: "This looks like corruption of the very worst kind."

"Does the Prime Minister share my fear that Trump is making his war decisions based on what enriches himself and his friends rather than what makes peace in the Middle East?" Ed Davey MP asked.

Since President Trump announced the US war with Iran, Ed Davey MP has been vocal about his opposition towards the war and has called for a "diplomatic" solution.

The MP also publicly shared his disappointment when President Trump was re-elected back in 2024.
