Kingston and Surbiton MP slams PM’s granting of US permission to UK bases amid war with Iran
By Tilly O'Brien 2nd Mar 2026
The MP for Kingston and Surbiton, Ed Davey, has taken to X (formerly Twitter) to share his opposition to the Prime Minister's decision to grant US permission to use UK bases as it continues its war with Iran.
Starmer announced over the weekend that the US will be allowed to use UK bases at RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia to launch "defensive" airstrikes against Iran - and destroy its missiles "at source" to prevent them firing across region.
In a post on X on Sunday, 1 March, Ed Davey MP expressed his opposition, saying: "No matter how the Prime Minister tries to redefine offensive as defensive, this is a slippery slope. He must not let Trump drag Britain into another prolonged war in the Middle East.
"Starmer must come to Parliament tomorrow, set out the legal case in full, and give MPs a vote."
The Liberal Democrat leader added: "The Iranian people deserve to live free from a brutal regime. Donald Trump's unilateral and illegal military action won't deliver freedom, peace and security. It will only unleash more bloodshed.
"The UK can't be dragged into another protracted Middle Eastern war by a US President. Keir Starmer needs to rule out the use of UK bases for any future unilateral US strikes."
He added: "Starmer needs to get on the phone to Trump and ask him to set out a plan to protect civilians and support a democratic transition in Iran.
"We've seen before that bombs don't bring about democracy and regime change without a plan just leads to more chaos and suffering.
"We have a duty to defend our brave British troops and citizens in the region, and that must be the focus of any operations. The UK must not be complicit in illegal military action."
