A debate in in Kingston Council and Social Media over cashless parking metres has emerged.

The current Liberal Democrat Council wish to convert all parking metres to go cashless.

The Conservative opposition are against this move.

Conservative Councillor for Coombe Hill Ward Rowena Bass laid out her argument on Twitter:

"Currently 1 in 5 parking payments are cash. Personally I use Ringo & prefer cashless. Same as many Twitter users.

"The issue here is to ensure that others less digitally savvy are not unfairly disadvantaged. I hope the Lib Dem council review impacts carefully."

Liberal Democrat Councillor for Grove, Jon Tolley, responded on Twitter:

"Have you got an example of someone who owns, taxes, insures, drives a car but doesn't have a bank card? Thats what you need for the argument.

"Until that it sounds like an unnecessary use of council funds that could be spent better elsewhere."

Cllr Tolley goes onto argue that the money spent by the council on cash parking machines could be better spent on social care.

What do you think about this issue - should parking metres become fully cashless or should they still be able to take cash?
