The creator of Kingston's famous toppling phone boxes will oversee the town centre's new sculpture trail.

Renowned Scottish artist David Mach RA created the phone box exhibit at Old London Road, titled 'Out of Order,' back in 1989.

David will now return to Kingston to help select six new sculptures to be featured in a sculpture trail through the town centre this summer.

He said: "I'm very excited to be one of the judges for the Sculpture Trail.

"I'm sure we'll have a lot of fun picking out a new artwork for the town.

"Let's thank Kingston for being so forward thinking and the partnership that's providing this opportunity."

Paul Stafford, elected member of The Royal Society of Sculptors and Honorary Fellow of Kingston University said:

"As a young artist myself I was bowled over by his work, which continues to be innovative, original and challenging.

"How fortunate we are to have David Mach RA as chair of our Kingston Sculpture Trail selection committee, the result of which will surely be the placing of some wondrous objects around our town centre."

The sculpture trail will open in August 2021 and last for six months.

During this time, Kingston visitors and residents will vote for their favourite sculpture.

The winning artist will be awarded £10,000 and have their work permanently installed in Kingston.

Artists can submit entries for the trail by 5pm this Friday (30 April). Those who are interested should email their proposal to [email protected] by the deadline.

As well as Mach, the selection panel will include two local students.

Kingston First said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for two young people interested in art and design, and invaluable for university applications and CVs."

Schools, Colleges, Youth Services or creative organisations in Kingston can nominate students to join the panel.

Students can also apply directly by sending a short statement (up to 200 words) on why they should represent the voice of young people in Kingston on the committee to: [email protected]

The deadline for nominations is this Friday at 5pm, so get applying!
