The story behind Kingston's toppling telephone boxes

By The Editor 27th Jan 2021

Anyone who has been in Kingston's town centre will have seen the famous tumbling telephone boxes

But why are they there, who made them and how long have they been there?

Luckily here at Nub News we are here to help.

The artwork is called 'Out of Order' and was designed by David Mach.

The telephone boxes first appeared in the town centre in 1989.

They were restored in the build-up to their 30th anniversary in 2019.

But the big question remains - why?

The sculpture was installed to celebrate a British tradition - the telephone box - and of course act as a tourist attraction.

The sculpture features 12 actually decommissioned telephone boxes.

Artist David Mach said on the sculptures anniversary: " It's one of my best outdoor sculptures I love these boxes and isn't it funny that even in these times and although they were removed from the British landscape, I feel they still bind us as a nation."
