A new branch of US chicken wing chain 'Wingstop' is set to open on the site of the old Pizza Hut on Clarence Street in Kingston, Nub News has learned.

The shop announced it would be opening a branch in Kingston last month but details of its location were revealed at a Council Sub-Licensing Committee yesterday (19 May).

At the meeting chaired by Councillor Olly Wehring the committee approved Wingstop's application for a licence to serve alcohol when it opens the new branch on 105 Clarence Street.

This was despite opposition from three residents of the accommodation block above the premises due to Wingstop not being 'child-friendly' like Pizza Hut and also planning to be open for longer, until 12am.

Wingstop in turn argued that the conditions of the application and experience as a licenced outlet would ensure it operated 'to a high standard' and not have any greater impact on the area.

The Clarence Street Pizza Hut closed in January earlier this year, with Wingstop acquiring the licence two months later.

Its new branch will be fitted out at a cost of almost half a million pounds (£460,000) and there will be 25-30 new employees at the outlet.

In its submission to the Council, Wingstop claimed it is not a fast-food restaurant as 'the average customer must wait between 10 and 12 minutes for their order to be ready as the food is freshly prepared dependant on the flavours ordered.'

The company said it will minimise noise caused by people leaving the establishment late at night by having a staggered closing time policy and dispersing any crowds outside.

Wingstop also says it is family friendly with children under 13 and families allowed to go to the front of the queue.
