Kingston and Surbiton MP Ed Davey has called for urgent action to tackle the spread of coronavirus in Kingston borough after new government data showed that covid cases in Chessington have increased by 800% in just seven days.
Statistics released today (June 4) show that coronavirus cases in Chessington South & Malden Rushett postcode soared from 4 to 36 between May 24 and May 30, a rolling rate of 404.8 which is one of the highest in the UK at the time of writing.
Earlier this week covid infections in Kingston rose by over 100% and yesterday (4 June) it was announced that Kingston will get surge testing and vaccines to help stop the spread of the virus.
Responding to the news, Kingston and Surbiton MP Ed Davey emphasised the seriousness of the situation and urged residents to stick closely to official advice.
He told Nub News: "Kingston's Covid infection rate has been rising at alarming speed in the last week and it's vital everyone understands how serious this could get.
"While there's no need to panic, urgent action is needed to prevent a return to a crisis, so everyone needs to play their part.
"Kingston Council and NHS are focusing on measures like surge testing and surge vaccination.
"We are pushing central Government to support these efforts and I want to urge everyone to stick strictly to official advice."
Nub News will continue to bring you the latest updates when we get them.
