Drivers in Kingston are being warned that two more School Streets are now in place in the borough, with motorists facing a £65 fine if they don't respect the new traffic regulations.

From today, Portland Road in Kingston town centre and Pine Gardens in Surbiton have restrictions on when cars can enter with vehicles banned from 8.30am-9.30am and 2.45pm-3.45pm on weekdays in term time.

People living on the roads can apply to the Council for exemptions from the scheme, which fines motorists £65 - £130 if not paid within two weeks - for entering during the restricted times.

The roads now have Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras which monitor traffic going through and signs have been placed by the road entrances warning drivers of the zone.

The new School Streets have been introduced by Kingston Council who say the scheme will make children safer during drop-off and pick-up times, improve fitness by encouraging active travel and reduce air pollution around the school gate.

Councillor Stephanie Archer, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainable Transport said: "The roll-out of School Streets across the borough is just one part of our wider commitment to tackling the climate emergency, improving air quality and enabling people to use sustainable travel options."

Anyone living on the streets who needs an exemption from the scheme must complete a vehicle registration form here by 22 November.
