Covid surge testing starts in Kingston

Covid surge testing is being rolled out in Kingston borough from today (Wednesday 9 June) in a bid to tackle an alarming rise in cases driven by the delta, or 'indian', variant of the virus with scientific name B1.617.2.

The testing was announced last week following an alarming spike in Kingston's coronavirus cases, including a jump of over 100% and the highest transmission rate in London.

Kingston and Surbiton MP Ed Davey has called for urgent action to tackle the spread of coronavirus in Kingston borough after new government data showed that covid cases in Chessington have increased by 800% in just seven days.

Statistics released today (June 4) show that coronavirus cases in Chessington South & Malden Rushett postcode soared from 4 to 36 between May 24 and May 30, a rolling rate of 404.8 which is one of the highest in the UK at the time of writing.

Residents who live in virus hotspots including Hook, Chessington and Norbiton are being urged to visit their local temporary test centres as the Council prepares to introduce surge testing and vaccinations to combat the spread.
