A member of the Surbiton Croquet Club has become a world champion.

Reg Bamford became World Association Croquet Champion for a record-equalling sixth time in October, beating Englishman Mark Avery in the final held in Florida.

72 players took part, and Surbiton players took half of the available silverware.

Surbiton club champion, Stephen Mulliner, himself a former world champion, was unable to win the highest prize, but won the consolation bowl, while Surbiton Croquet Club Chair Nick Parish won the Manager's Invitational Event.

Commenting on the event, the club's Chair, Parish, said: "The World Championships represent the pinnacle of our sport, and the Florida event showed that many of the best croquet players in the world are members at Surbiton.

"It's not an exaggeration to say that Surbiton members went to Florida and showed the rest of the world how to play."

Surbiton Croquet Club is welcoming new members.

The club says: "You don't need to be a World Champion to join Surbiton Croquet Club! Beginner's classes start again in March, and all abilities are welcome."
