A Surbiton GP has expressed the importance of skin protection amid the current heatwave.

The Doctor Surgery (TDS), which is located on Ewell Road, offers mole checks and skin surgery to remove moles and other skin lesions.

TDS first opened around 12 months ago under the ownership of local GP Dr Chetan Shori and his business partner Dr Ben Gauci.

It is a private health care clinic, which provides a range of services, including private GP appointments.

"We have several consultants who see patients at our clinic. For example, we have a cardiologist, a rheumatologist, and various other specialists," Dr Shori told Nub News.

He added: "We also offer a range of dermatology-based services and skin surgery, including removal of moles, cysts, lipomas and other skin lesions. We also offer other skin-based treatments, such as laser and doctor-led aesthetic treatments.

"So, we're a bit of a one-stop shop for a variety of medical treatments that are available privately."

Dr Shori still works as a GP for the NHS.

Speaking about why he and Dr Gauci decided to open a private clinic, he said: "So, we're friends who decided to open up this clinic together."

"We both work in the NHS as well, but identified a growing need for high quality, local private healthcare, which would usually require a trip into central London."

"Private clinics can take a bit of the burden off the NHS, and allow people a bit more flexibility to utilise services at their convenience."

Dr Shori says that since opening, TDS has had "good interest from the local community in utilising [its] services, and getting quicker access to appointments".

"We've been getting busier and busier each month, which has been really good. Certain services are under strain and subject to long waiting lists and we give people the option to have these done at their own convenience."

"We try to provide people with a bit more convenience to see a doctor in a comfortable environment, without the usual time constraints. TDS can offer same day appointments with one of our experienced clinicians."

"I think that's what people value really, is that ability to see someone when they want to see them, rather than waiting for that appointment letter to come through," Dr Shori said.

TDS' Skin health tips for summer are:

  • With hotter weather and increased sun exposure, Dr Shori is encouraging people to pay closer attention to their skin health.
  • He advises people to wear sunscreen with a high SPF, avoid prolonged periods in direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day, and regularly check their skin for any changes.
  • Anyone who notices a new mole or changes to an existing mole — including changes in size, shape, colour or texture — should seek medical advice.
