Six design teams have been shortlisted for the £250,000 competition to transform New Malden roundabout and Pocket Park.

The contest, run by Kingston Council and the London Festival of Architecture (LFA), was launched to re-landscape New Malden's Fountain Roundabout and neighbouring Pocket Park which were damaged by Storm Eunice in early 2022.

Following a total of 41 submissions for the 'A Gateway to New Malden' contest, which is also seen as a way of supporting the town in its recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, the six shortlisted design teams are:

  • Ciaociao Design and Xinli Du
  • James Grayley Architects and SEED Landscape Design
  • PATALAB ARCHITECTS in collaboration with Adolfo Harrison Gardens, and students Kyungjoo Min and Jang-hee Lee
  • Hayatsu Architects + 121 Collective, Hortus Collective
  • Ludwig Willis Architects, Robert Bray Associates, Where Pathways Meet, Polimekanos and Sophie Porter
  • Campbell Cadey + Griselda Kitching

More information on the shortlisted design teams can be found here.

Since being selected, the six teams have been tasked with developing their design concepts for the area in more detail which will be displayed at a public exhibition for local residents, businesses and stakeholders this coming Friday and Saturday.

The exhibition will take place at the Kingston Environment Centre, 1 Kingston Road, New Malden on Friday, 23rd June from 10am - 1pm and Saturday, 24th June from 10am - 4pm.

For those who are unable to make the public exhibition, an online survey will be available on this page between 23 - 29 June 2023.

The feedback given at this week's exhibition events as well as the online survey will then be used as part of the final judging process (judges will be made up of LFA members, council and community representatives), with a winner set to be selected in July.

Further engagement events for other projects across Kingston are taking place in July including Eagle Brewery Wharf, whilst Davies White Architects have now been selected to deliver the next phase of work for the Memorial Gardens project.

Cllr Lesley Heap, New and Old Malden Neighbourhood Chair, said: "Ensuring that our residents and visitors can enjoy the wonderful spaces the borough has to offer is really important. That is why we are asking people to get involved and let us know how they want to see these areas transformed.

"Making these spaces more attractive also helps to bring people into our town centres, a key part of our work to regenerate our borough and support the local economy. Exciting plans like these one help us to improve our community spaces, bring life into our high streets, and enhance our access to nature."
