Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a flat fire in Kingston this morning.

Fire crews from Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden, Twickenham, Wimbledon and Richmond arrived at Drovers Court of Fairfield East at 7.35 am and had the fire under control by 9.23am.

One women suffering from smoke inhalation was rescued by fire crew from the three-storey residential building and taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service, whilst another was led to safety from the second floor by fire crews using an escape hood, which provides protection to members of the public from four of the main fire gases ((carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen chloride and acrolein).

A three-roomed ground floor flat of Drovers Court was completely destroyed by the fire, located next to the Kingston Quaker Centre.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
