KINGSTON shopkeepers say they begged the Council to put CCTV cameras on the road where a man was stabbed to death yesterday.
Lee Duncan, who has run South African shop 'Best Biltong' on Surbiton Road for 18 years, told Kingston Nub News today that they have been asking for cameras on the road for years but that Kingston Council did nothing about it.
Lee told Nub News: "It's unsafe. A lot of fights happen here, there's a lot of anti-social behaviour on this parade.
"We were begging [the Council] for CCTV."
Last night a 32-year-old man, named locally as Farhad Joseph Khalili, was pronounced dead on the road after suffering stab wounds. A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
He was treated for his wounds outside the kebab shop 'The Kebab Guyz' which is located directly opposite Best Biltong.
A member of Lee's staff rushed to help Mr Khalili but sadly there was nothing that he or the emergency services could do.
Tamara Hadid, who works at neighbouring estate agents Century 21 Royale, said police are called to the street "at least once a month."
She said she saw Mr Khalili receive treatment yesterday but was not shocked due to the regularity of these incidents.
Tamara said: "It's so regular for us that when I saw him lying there I just thought, it's another incident in the road."
She estimated that she and Lee have asked the council at least 10 times over the past three years for CCTV.
"One of the reasons why we wanted it was because we knew something like this was going to happen," she said.
Both Lee and Tamara noted that the Council had put in speed cameras nearby, despite ignoring the CCTV requests.
This includes a camera on Surbiton Crescent which the Surrey Comet reported made £2 million from fines in 2 months after it was installed in 2016.
Helen Hinton from Kingston Independent Residents Group (KIRG) told Nub News that there are concerns over drug dealing in this area.
"When I heard about this on Twitter I was very upset," she said.
"It's very concerning as Surbiton Juniors, Surbiton High are all nearby - young people are put at risk."
She accused the Council of not listening to the fears of businesses in the area.
