Nine-year-old Jack

Check out this inspirational story from Kingston Police:

Our first person in this story is that of MSC officer who valiantly gives up his spare time to do a police role for free. Heroic yes, but wait, there's more.

MSC Tom Karlsen was born with a heart defect and had surgery when he was merely 6 months old.

He told us that he was never even sure he could be a police officer.

But he volunteers with us nevertheless whenever life allows.

He was recently made aware of a courageous young boy called Jack who had a similar condition to his.

Young Jack's dream was to join our police family and help others, but because of his condition, thought it would stay an unattainable aspiration.

Hoping to help the young lad, Tom wrote a letter to Jack and included some of our Police patches to hopefully cheer him up.

Jack's mum responded and she agreed to allow us to share some of it with you now.

She said: "We just wanted to write to you to say a huge thank you for the amazing letter and badges you sent to our son Jack. We were completely overwhelmed by your kind words and support.

"Jack was born a healthy baby (or so we thought) but after a few months he began getting poorly quite often and at the age of 11 months we were told he has a slight heart murmur.

"Jack was finally diagnosed at the age of 14 months with Tetralogy of Fallot and referred to the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals Specialist Care Hospital, and within 3 weeks he had open heart surgery to fix his heart.

"Jack is now 9 years old and is doing really well but will need more surgery in the next few years.

"Jack has always wanted to be a police officer and his dream job is to be a dog handler. As you can imagine he was so excited to get your letter and excitedly told his teacher and class over his zoom call that he had a new friend called PC Tom and proudly showed them the badges you very kindly sent. It really did make his day.

"Once again thank you for your kindness and for making a little boy very happy".
