New plans to build flats in Kingston town centre have been submitted, five years after proposals for the site were first put forward.

Developer Kingston Gate Properties now wants to build 265 flats in two tower blocks up to 15 storeys tall next to Kingston station, after revising proposals it first submitted in 2019.

The new flats would be split across a 15-storey tower block and 12-storey building on Canbury Place car park and Kingsgate Road, if the plans are approved by Kingston Council. The developer has not included any affordable housing in the proposals.

There would be four shops on the ground and first floors of the buildings, along with communal space for residents.

Kingsgate Road would be closed to traffic and two alternative routes created – up either Seven Kings Way or via Sopwith Way and a new left turn into Richmond Road.

New pedestrian and cycle routes would be created through the site, along with a children's play area.

The plans include eight disabled car parking spaces and one car club space.

Kingston Gate Properties' original proposals for the site, submitted in 2019, included 445 homes in tower blocks up to 27 storeys tall.

It reduced the size of the proposed development in the latest application by excluding land on Richmond Road, which was included in the previous plans.

Application documents said the loss of Canbury Place car park, which has 106 parking spaces, would be 'negligible' as there are around 2,000 parking spaces available across Kingston town centre.

The documents added: "The vision is to create a vibrant addition to the community and reinvigorate an underutilised site which sits in an important location, within close proximity of central Kingston.

"Canbury Place has the opportunity to deliver a collection of high-quality buildings providing much-needed homes in the area, as well as play a key role in promoting pedestrian and cycle movements through and around the site, most notably with the proposed pedestrianisation of Kingsgate Road.

"The scheme also has the opportunity to provide a large area of public realm in an area lacking high-quality open space.

"The vision is that all elements of design will come together to create a sustainable place for people to live, work, rest, and enjoy."

The council will decide on the plans in due course.
