In 2023 Kingston joined the UK's network of Age Friendly Communities to "better understand how the borough can be more age friendly", according to the council.

There are around 25,000 people aged 65 and over living in Kingston, and this is likely to rise to around 37,000 in the next 20 years.

Combining these two key groups will provide a stronger voice for older people in the area and more dedicated community for the council and its partners to engage with directly. The new Kingston Age Friendly Forum will meet on a quarterly basis.

Kingston's Age Friendly programme has already delivered three community-based Move Well, Live Well events and the group has demonstrated its impact by helping shape the borough's Adult Social Care Strategy and the Community Transport review.

International Day of Older People - 'On Your Doorstep'

The council's mission to support residents to be active and involved echoes the theme for this year's International Day of Older People on 1 October 2026: celebrating social connections and helping people find activities and support 'on their doorstep'.

Councillor Sabah Hamed, Kingston Council's portfolio holder for adult social care, public health and equalities, said: "Older people make huge contributions to our communities as workers, volunteers and carers, but as we age, what's on our doorstep becomes even more important.

"Whether that's getting to a medical appointment, popping to the shops or joining in with local activities - it is much easier to stay healthy and connected if it is local."

There is a wealth of information about local groups, activities and support on Connected Kingston. Many are free, such as Happy Feet walking group at Kingston Station and Fulham Memories sessions at Kingston Library and Tudor Drive Library.

The Move Well, Live Well collection of activities highlights activities and events in the local area, and there is also a host of volunteering opportunities on Volunteering Kingston.
