Met launches investigation into Tolworth sports pavilion fire

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters tackled a fire on Jubilee Way in Chessington yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, 8 July).

Most of a single-storey sports pavilion, situated behind the indoor bowls club, was alight.

No injuries were reported but the Met Police has launched an investigation into the fire with the cause being treated as "suspicious"

Police remained at the scene today (Wednesday, 9 July) with police tape surrounding the pavilion.

A Met spokesperson told Kingston Nub News: "On Tuesday, 8 July at 16:57hrs, Met officers, the London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade responded to reports of a fire on King George Recreation Ground, Chessington.

 "No injuries have been reported.

 "Multiple nearby roads were closed for a short time while the London Fire Brigade controlled the fire. 

 "This fire is being treated as suspicious, and a crime scene has been established.

 "Several lines of enquiry are ongoing.

 "No arrests have been made at this stage.  

 "Please call police on 101 with CAD 5888/08JUL if you were a witness or have any information which might help.

 "You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or visit crimestoppers-uk.org."
