During Prime Minister's Questions yesterday, Wednesday 9th October, Ed Davey MP outlined the importance of improving the UK's relationship with the European Union and help by negotiating a Youth Mobility Scheme.

This comes as Keir Starmer PM has continued to rule out such a scheme being negotiated with the EU.

At Prime Minister's Questions, the Liberal Democrat leader and MP for Kingston and Surbiton, asked the Prime Minister: "Across this House, we all agree that we need to get our economy growing strongly again so that we can improve people's lives and raise the money for our public services.

"The Liberal Democrats believe that one of the best ways of doing that is to improve our relationship with our European neighbours on things like trade, and I welcome the fact that the Prime Minister has made that a priority in his first few weeks, but what I just do not understand is that he has ruled out negotiating a youth mobility scheme with our European partners.

"This could be so good for young people, for businesses and for re-establishing that relationship. Will he reconsider?"

At the Liberal Democrat Autumn Conference, Liberal Democrat's put forward a plan to improve the work and travel links for young people through a Youth Mobility Scheme with the EU.

The plan put forward by the Liberal Democrats at conference would see the UK's current Youth Mobility Scheme expanded to EU countries.

The motion passed at the Liberal Democrat Conference calls for the Government to:

  • Open negotiations with the EU to extend the Youth Mobility Scheme on a reciprocal basis to EU countries, including increasing the age limit from 30 to 35.
  • Expand opportunities for young people to study, teach and volunteer abroad by returning to the Erasmus Plus programme as an associated country.
  • Take action on excessive roaming charges - opening discussions with the EU, and opening a consultation on UK phone company charges, including the possibility of abolishing them.
  • Take steps to negotiate passport- and visa-free school trips between UK and EU member states, on a reciprocal basis.

Having a disabled son himself, Sir Ed Davey is passionate about improving accessibility for people living with disabilities in the UK.

For example, he has helped ensure that there are working lifts available at Surbiton Station, and is currently working on getting the rear lift at the station working.

As the leader of the Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey MP wants to help improve the healthcare in the UK.

He told Kingston Nub News that he would be keen to introduce former US President Barak Obama's legacy to provide more funding into research for rarer cancers.
