A 44-year-old runner completed his 100th marathon last weekend in a scenic race along the Thames that started and finished in Kingston.

Michael Wiggins, who has been running marathons for half his lifetime, completed the Thames Meander Marathon in 3 and a half hours on Saturday 7 August.

Michael was greeted by family and friends and had a celebratory cake baked by his mum to mark the occasion.

The runner, who has completed the Thames Meander 6 times, came 11th out of 181 finishers at the event.

Speaking to Richmond Nub News the Streatham native described the day as "brilliant" despite the downpour.

He said: "It was such a brilliant morning even in the two hours plus of horrible rain!

"It definitely didn't dampen the mood and the sunshine even came out for the final mile and photos afterwards.

"I was lucky enough to have 13 other Clapham Pioneers including my Dad running the half marathons so plenty of support at the finish line.

"The afternoon was spent in a local pub with friends and family and a brilliant cake made by my Mum."

Michael still turned up to training with Clapham Pioneers on Sunday and is now looking ahead to his next race.

He said: "Yesterday's running club group run (11 miles) was a bit of a struggle but I'm now looking forward to a couple of days rest before getting ready for the next marathon, which is Brighton in five weeks' time."

The Thames Meander Marathon starts and finishes at the YMCA Hawker Centre HQ on Water Lane, near Kingston town centre. The route meanders along the Thames Path to the Barn Elms Rowing Club and back again.

Race director David Ross said: "It's a lovely scenic out / back trail running event with lovely views of the river Thames all the way along the Thames Path.

"We like runners of varying abilities and it's one of the most popular trail running events in the UK."

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the marathon last weekend!
