The Kingston Liberal Synagogue (KLS) are to host 'A Concert for Ukraine' on the 9th July in a bid to raise donations for charities operating in the war-torn country.

KLS, who have been based in Kingston on Rushett Road for over 40 years, plan to bring people together to enjoy an evening of Ukrainian and Jewish music including Yiddish songs from Ukraine and a range of Jewish folk, classical music and liturgical melodies.

All proceeds from the concert will be matched by the synagogue up to £2,000 and sent to charities working in Ukraine and those operating in London with refugees.

Rebecca Singerman-Knight, Deputy Chair at KLS, explained to Nub News how the idea for 'A Concert for Ukraine' first came about.

She said: "As soon as the war in Ukraine broke out we started we started collecting donations from the local community – we worked closely with Prosperity Restaurant in Twickenham who were organising the transportation of collected items to Ukraine.

"We also have a host of members who are musicians in addition to our active choir and so we thought it would be nice to put on a concert showcasing them whilst raising money for a vital cause."

As of June 1, The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has verified a total of 4,169 civilian deaths since Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24 took place.

Communities in Kingston and across London have come together to raise funds for Ukraine over the last three months, donating supplies that are desperately short in the Eastern European country including items for soldiers such as sleeping bags and thermal clothing and childcare items like baby food pouches and pacifiers.
