Kingston Council awarded grant for Kingston 2025 community histories research
Kingston Council has been awarded a £178k grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to support a major community research project.
The communities' research will help to uncover diverse and hidden histories of the borough.
Communities will be able to research and share the stories that matter to them to create a richer, contemporary and more inclusive perspective on the borough's history.
The community research project will play a vital role in the landmark Kingston 2025 cultural celebrations, which will mark the 1100th anniversary of the crowning of King Athelstan, the first King of a united England, in the heart of Kingston.
The diverse cultural programme, delivered with partners across the borough, will be underpinned by an exploration of the borough's past, present and future, with new stories and discoveries adding to Kingston's rich history and ensuring they are saved for future generations.
Residents of all ages from communities across the borough will be able to participate in different ways to bring to life the stories of the people and events that have shaped Kingston.
The projects will shine a spotlight on five key themes that have been developed through community engagement to reflect stories of migration, trade, decolonisation, the natural environment and suburban aspiration.
The funding award will enable the borough to create an important legacy that will help to reshape our understanding of the history of the borough while amplifying the benefits and impact that heritage and culture plays in people's lives.
The project will contribute to Kingston Heritage Service's commitment to working with communities to ensure better representation in its permanent collections, exhibitions and events both at Kingston Museum and in the archives held in the History Centre.
Cllr Andreas Kirsch, Leader of Kingston Council and Portfolio Holder for Culture said: "We are thrilled to receive this support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
"Thanks to National Lottery player's vital support, residents of all ages will be part of bringing to life the stories of the people who have shaped the diverse communities and unique places that are part of Kingston's enduring appeal.
"Through our Kingston 2025 programme we are set to discover and preserve these as–yet untold stories as we celebrate all that Kingston has become because of the amazing contributions of local people."
