The MP for Kingston in Surbiton, Sir Ed Davey, has urged the newly appointed Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, to fix the country's "broken care system".

Speaking after a telephone meeting with the PM on Wednesday (29 July), Sir Ed said: "I have just come off a call with the Prime Minister and it was a good call, a good meeting.

"The Prime Minister clearly wants to crack on [with the issues regarding the UK's care system]. He wants to involve leaders of all the main parties, and he was talking about the next steps.

"But there wasn't much detail on policy. I raised the issue which is close to my heart, of family carers, making sure they are the heart of this whole discussion, and to be fair to the Prime Minister, he responded really positively and warmly to that.

"So, I think it was a good start all in all."

The Lib Dem Leader added: "I feel hopeful about the talks [on Wednesday] on fixing our broken care system but this is just the beginning. A solution is desperately needed. I will always stand up for family carers through this process."

Sir Ed has been a carer "all his life" and currently cares for his disabled son who he says needs 24-hour care.
