Kingston: calls for blanket 20mph speed limit after van flips over in town centre

There were fresh calls for a blanket 20mph speed limit in Kingston this week after a van flipped over while rounding a corner in the town centre.

The Hyperoptic van, which has a slogan on the back reading: "CAUTION: delivering ridiculously fast broadband," toppled over on a corner of the Richmond Road A307.

Dramatic photos show the van lying on its side and firefighters and police at the scene.

Police later confirmed that no-one was injured or needed medical assistance.

Hyperoptic later posted on Twitter that the driver is "thankfully okay."

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade added that teams were there to help remove from the van safely.

Richmond Road was closed for an hour leading to queues and heavy traffic.

On Twitter, news of the accident was quickly picked up on by Lib Dem councillors who called for a blanket 20mph speed limit in Kingston town centre.

Councillor Olly Wehring retweeted a news item with the comment: "Siri, tell me why all roads in #Kingston Town Neighbourhood should have 20mph speed limit."

Councillor Jon Tolley posted: "in related news a van toppled over outside a college in Kingston Town Centre? but we don't want 20mph cos, um, cos oh idk."

The pair were one of 5 councillors who supported a proposal to roll out 20mph zones to more roads in Kingston town centre at a committee meeting this year.

But the policy was rejected after a narrow vote of 5 to 5, decided by the chair's casting vote against them.

The outcome was a factor in Councillor Tolley's decision to leave the Kingston Lib Dems earlier this month.

Do you think more of Kingston's roads should have 20mph speed limits?
