Kingston and Surbiton MP petitions against King’s state visit with Trump

The MP for Kingston and Surbiton, Ed Davey, has created a Liberal Democrat-led petition urging the Prime Minister to cancel the King's upcoming state visit with US President, Donald Trump.
The visit has been proposed for April despite tensions between Prime Minister Kier Starmer and Trump.
Speaking about why the trip should be cancelled, the Lib Dem leader said: "Donald Trump has launched a reckless, illegal war that is pushing up energy bills and pushing British families closer to the brink.
"He has repeatedly insulted our country, and he has insulted our troops, including the 457 British personnel who lost their lives in Afghanistan.
"So why on earth are we rewarding this bully with a state visit from our king?
"A state visit from our king would be a huge diplomatic coup for Donald Trump. It would reward someone who is driving up costs for British families and insulting our country and our armed forces."
"Does that sound like behaviour that should be rewarded?" he asked.
"No, we should cancel the visit. Kier Starmer needs to show Trump that we will not be insulted, and we will not let British families pay the price for his war.
The petition description says: "Donald Trump's illegal war in Iran is devastating the Middle East and putting up people's bills in Britain.
"A State Visit is the highest honour our country can give. Rewarding Donald Trump right now would be a massive mistake.
"The King should not have to meet with a bully who ignores international law and insults our country and our brave troops."
