Goodgym, the UK fitness organisation and charity, is calling on Kingston residents to assist them with their Social Visit Mission, aimed at tackling isolation and loneliness amongst the elderly.
Launched in 2009, Goodgym operates in 59 regions across the UK using fitness as a means of benefitting the local community.
Members run, walk or cycle to help community projects with practical tasks such as planting trees for the local park, shifting earth for a communal gardening project or sorting cans for a food bank.
Tackling loneliness among the elderly is key to the organisation's mission. Research carried out by Goodgym indicates over one million aged 65 and over admit to always or often feeling lonely, and 17% of those living alone see family and friends less than once a week.
Goodgym's social care mission is being piloted in Southwark, Lewisham, Maidenhead and Kingston upon Thames.
Referrals for residents who are part of the social care mission are listed online for volunteers to choose from.
The purpose of a social visit is a friendly chat to brighten up the person's day and provide safe and meaningful company.
Training and support are provided, and you are able to register your interest here.
