A new fried chicken restaurant has opened in Kingston town centre.

Wingstop, a branch of the US chain founded in 1994, welcomed customers to its Kingston branch for the first time yesterday (Wednesday 14 July).

The new outlet is located on 105 Clarence Street in the premises of the old Pizza Hut.

Its opening hours are:

- Monday to Thursday: 11am - 11pm

- Friday and Saturday: 11am - 12am

- Sunday: 11am - 10pm

Collection and dine-in options are available.

The main dishes are chicken wings, boneless, tenders and burgers, and there are 10 flavours of 'rub' to choose from.

Sides include fries, coleslaw and dips, while churros are also available as a dessert.

Tom Grogan, one of the Directors of Lemon Pepper Holdings , the company who have franchised Wingstop in the UK, said: "We are excited to be opening our 12th restaurant in a historic town such as Kingston Upon Thames and I feel Wingstop will be a great addition to the local community."

Last May Nub News reported that the restaurant would be opening a new Kingston store, creating 25-30 jobs and investing in a £460,000 renovation of the premises.

On social media there was a mixed reaction to the news. Some people questioned whether Kingston needs a new chicken shop in that area given that there are already 3 nearby, while others were unhappy about another meat-based food outlet in the town centre.

"We really need a Temple of Seitan in Kingston..." said one commenter.

But others welcomed the news, praising the quality of Wingstop's food and highlighting that as a sit-down restaurant it is different from Kingston's takeaway-only chicken outlets.

"Sounds like it's going to be much nicer than your average chicken shop," was one response.

Last May there was some controversy as Wingstop was granted a license to serve alcohol by the Council despite complaints about the potential disturbance this could cause to residents of the flats above.

Wingstop said in its defence that the chain has experience dealing with late-night customers and will disperse any crowds that form outside the restaurant late at night.
