Kingston Hive, a collective of local volunteers committed to tackling the climate and ecological crisis, has officially opened its temporary hub by Kingston Station as it sets its sight on working with residents throughout the borough.

The community organisation, with help from Kingston Council, has taken over space next to cycle parking at Kingston Station on Wood Street which will allow Kingston Hive to host a range of activities and workshops between November and January 2023, that will help educate and empower communities to tackle climate change.

These include providing:

  • vegan food
  • repair workshops
  • listening circles
  • education sessions on subjects such as renewable energy
  • film nights
  • music
  • sustainable eating classes

The Hive aims to give residents and visitors the skills and support they need to cut carbon emissions and energy costs, look after the natural environment and live a more local, sustainable lifestyle.

Charlotte Haigh from Kingston Hive said: "At COP27, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has warned we are 'on the highway climate hell with our foot on the accelerator' and that what we do in the next few years will determine whether we have a liveable planet in the future, for our children and grandchildren. The climate emergency is quite obvious just stepping outside in this unseasonably warm November.

"We know Kingston residents are very anxious about the situation but it can feel overwhelming - and that's where Kingston Hive comes in. We are providing a hub for people to get the information they need, learn practical skills to help reduce carbon, costs and waste, and meet others who share their concerns. Joining together is going to be essential as we face the climate and ecological emergency.

"Kingston Hive is by the community, for the community."
