Annual Seething Freshwater Sardine Festival to return to Surbiton this weekend
By Tilly O'Brien 30th Apr 2026
Local community not-for-profit The Community Brain (TCB)'s annual Seething Freshwater Sardine Festival is returning to Surbiton this weekend.
The festival will run from 12pm – 5pm on Sunday, 3 May on Claremont Road in Surbiton.
It celebrates the ancient tradition of sardine fishing in the River Thames in Surbiton.
TCB said: "Since sardines were once again introduced to the river in 2005, local people have celebrated the capture of this magical food with a festival.
"Bands and entertainment all day, delicious fresh food and drink stalls keep everyone refreshed, arts and crafts are available to peruse, and a procession takes us to the river to watch the haul of the sardines, which are of course taken to the famous Sardine BBQ.
"Alongside the celebratory singalong and procession (starting at 2pm) for the year's first haul, you can look forward to some fab live music from the likes of Chris Von Sheffner and Heaven's Lieutenant, plus a new community drumming workshop debuting this year courtesy of the talented and aptly-named Kingston Community Drumming group at 12:40pm."
There will also be food stalls, entertainment, and a charity bar running throughout the day.
Additionally, at 2.30pm, there will be the famous sardine catch at Queen's Promenade by Raven's Ait island.
And from 3.15pm, there will be a sardine BBQ at Claremont Gardens.
