New bike path and riverside cycle route open at Kingston Station

By Ellie Brown - Local Democracy Reporter 2nd Jun 2021

A new transport hub including storage for 250 bikes and a cycle route linking the town centre with the river has opened at Kingston Station.

The hub had its grand opening on Tuesday 25 May last week with representatives of Kingston Council, Kingston Cycle Campaign, and the scheme's architects and consultants all attending .

The Council-backed scheme has been five years in the making, with a public consultation ending in 2016 and construction starting in 2017.

In 2019 a key bridge was installed, leading to the temporary closure of the Kingsgate underpass.

Kingston Council's Portfolio Holder for Environment & Sustainable Transport Councillor Hilary Gander was at the opening of the new bike hub and cycle route.

In a Twitter post on the day she said: "So pleased that Kingston's north-south protected cycle route is fully open.

"The bridge and the Hub look great!

"@RBKingston had the vision, with @TfL and our creative partners we made it happen."

The Kingston and Surbiton Green Party also commented on the new hub.

They said: "Glad there was a proper event marking its opening, given the length it took to complete.

"Hopefully the trees will be cared for and some more greenery added

"À welcome addition to #ActiveTravel in the borough #cycling."

Meanwhile, local pressure group Kingston Cycle Campaign used the event to call for better cycling storage in Kingston.

They said: "We are keen for @RBKingston to look at increasing secure bike parking at other stations too and to accelerate the rollout of cycle hangars.

"These hangars can provide on street secure bike parking for the many residents who lack the facility to store a bike at home."
