KINGSTON MP Sir Ed Davey has said that Prime Minister Boris Johnson "has to go" after a series of scandals over parties held at 10 Downing Street during lockdown.

Sir Ed, the leader of the Liberal Democrat party, told American news channel CNN that the PM had broken the rules, been "caught out" and lied to Parliament.

"And in the British system if you lie to Parliament as a minister, including as a Prime Minister, you have to resign," he said.

Asked about the enquiry by Sue Gray, the Kingston and Surbiton MP said he had been waiting for that but since then "we've had a lot more evidence which frankly is unambiguous."

He added: "We don't need to hear the enquiry results from Sue Gray - they've almost become redundant because of the evidence we've had since the enquiry was set up."

His comments come as Boris Johnson faces mounting threats to his leadership, including letters of no confidence from newer MPs elected in 2019.

The Liberal Democrats have tabled an Early Day Motion stating no confidence in the Prime Minister but this has just 22 signatures at the time of writing.

Johnson will face MPs in the House of Common today for Prime Minister's Questions at 12pm.

In Kingston, a Green councillor supported by an independent has tabled a motion of no confidence in the Prime Minister ahead of a full Council meeting this month.

If voted through, the motion would call on the leader of the Lib-Dem led Council to write to Johnson and formally urge him to resign.

But the Leader of the Council's opposition, Councillor Kevin Davis, has told Nub News that he and his fellow Conservative councillors will be voting against it.

He added: "It would be quite nice for the local council to concentrate on what it is responsible for (improving local lives) and not waste time in pointless finger wagging and willy waving."

There are currently nine Conservative councillors elected to the authority, one Green, one independent and thirty-seven Liberal Democrats.
