KINGSTON councillors are calling on the borough council to declare no confidence in Prime Minister Boris Johnson, following a week of scandals over parties held in the grounds of 10 Downing Street.

Green Councillor Sharron Sumner has tabled a motion calling on the leader of Kingston Council, Andreas Kirsch, to write to the PM asking him to resign.

Her motion has been seconded by independent councillor Jon Tolley and comes ahead of a full Council meeting on 27 January.

If voted through, Sumner's motion would see Kingston Council note its "severe disappointment" with Mr Johnson and state that he "acted unlawfully, misled Parliament and lied to the people of our country."

It adds that the PM attended parties while millions of others kept to the rules, often at huge personal cost.

Cllr Sumner said, "We all remember how tough last year's lock down was and how the vast majority of people here in Kingston Borough and across the UK complied – even if it meant they couldn't see loved ones in person, attend family funerals or visit relatives in care homes.

"In Kingston the community spirit and mutual help was exceptional and we got through the worst of it together.

"Yet we now know all this time Boris Johnson and his cronies were holding regular drinks parties – completely against the lockdown rules.

"With high infection rates still here in Kingston, it is vital that public messages are clear, achievable and trusted, but with Boris Johnson at the helm that is now impossible.

"The PM misled Parliament, lied to the country and has now become a danger to public health. I'm calling on councillors of all parties on the Council to back my motion and formally call on the PM to go."

Kingston Council will meet in full on 27 January where and there will be an opportunity for the Lib-Dem led authority to vote on Sumner's motion.

It comes after Kingston and Surbiton MP Sir Ed Davey repeatedly called on the Prime Minister to resign in the wake of the scandals.

Writing on twitter yesterday, he said: "Cummings proves what we have always known - Boris Johnson is fundamentally a dishonest man, he has lied to Parliament, he has lied to the country - he must resign."

Sir Ed is the leader of the Liberal Democrats party, which two days ago tabled an Early Day Motion station no confidence in Mr Johnson.

It has so far been signed by 22 MPs including Green Party leader Caroline Lucas.
