Kingston: council removes illegally moored boat from riverside
An abandoned narrowboat left for 6 weeks by the river in Kingston has been removed by the Council.
The narrowboat, 'Cygnet', had been moored illegally by Queen's Promenade since late May and was put into secure storage on July 5.
Kingston Council removed the boat using powers under the Greater London Council General Powers Act 1972 , and says it will claim back removal costs from the owner if the boat is claimed - or via sale if it isn't.
The Council said : "The river plays an important role in defining the distinctive character of the Royal Borough of Kingston and boats that overstay on moorings or occupy areas where mooring is not permitted, affect enjoyment of river users and those who wish to use the riverside.
"The Council therefore takes robust action against those boats who do not comply with mooring arrangements."

But commenters on the Council's original tweet said that the problem of illegally moored boats has not fully been dealt with.
Michael Renton said: "When will the council do the same for other boats that are illegally moored?"
A commenter named Sam added: "Why haven't the other boats been removed as well?
"One has been there for over a year and another for over 6 months."
