Kingston Rowing Club will be hosting some of the 'top' rowing clubs from across the country in the Kingston Regatta next week.

All races are going to take place between Ravens Ait Island and Kingston Bridge for free across two days (13-14 July).

Kingston Rowing Club's Nicola Savage tells Kingston Nub News that spectators can expect "rowing crews from numerous different clubs, all competing, side by side along a 1km course on Saturday in sprint racing.

"On Sunday it's the turn of the junior rowers - under 18s to compete - and they do so on a shorter course, over 500m.

"All the action takes place on the stretch of the Thames between Raven's Ait (the start), and Kingston Bridge (the finish). Crews have to line up on stake boats first before getting the starter's instructions."

Despite many rowing clubs signing up already, registration is still open this week.

"Last year there were over 300 races across two days, so you're looking at well over 100 clubs," says Ms Savage. "This year it's free to enter for spectators, in previous years there has been a small charge to enter the spectators' enclosure, but now we've made it free to make it more inclusive and to encourage more people to come along."

Ms Savage continues: "Part of what makes Kingston so special is its great riverside location, and this is a great opportunity to enjoy the warm weather (hopefully), and watch some exciting live sport, right on your doorstep.

"There's plenty of hot food stalls on offer, a licensed bar, toilets and plenty of places to sit. You can also bring a picnic and just relax for the day."

"Kingston has one of the oldest established rowing clubs in the country, with people from all ages taking part, from children to people in their eighties.

"If you've ever been interested in finding out more about sport, come on down and see for yourself."

Parking is available for £10 per day, all day during the event.
