Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray was in a bullish mood following his commanding win over Chung Hyeon in the opening round of the Surbiton Trophy on Monday afternoon.
The former world number one, who skipped the French Open to focus on the grass-court season, beat South Korean Chung Hyeon 6-3 6-2 in the opening round of the Surbiton Trophy Challenger event.
Following a bright start from the former world No.19, Chung's recent lack of match play began to show, with a nervy double fault followed by another error, giving Murray the early break and a 3-1 lead.
The Scotsman showed his experience throughout and looked very comfortable back on the surface that has seen him lift three Grand Slams and win an Olympic gold medal. He dropped just five points on serve to wrap up the opening set and made a quick start in the second.
After breaking in the opening game the match became fairly routine for Murray, who crowned a quality first round performance with a brace of aces to see out the win in an hour and 12 minutes.
Following his victory, the 36-year-old was asked whether he saw himself as one of the world's top 10 players on grass, even in the twilight stage of his career, to which he confidently said: "Yes, I think so. It is hard to put numbers on it but yes, I would fancy myself against a lot of them.
"Last year I won against Nick Kyrgios who made the final of Wimbledon, I won against Stefanos Tsitsipas – it is probably not his favourite surface but he is one of the best players in the world.
"And I was a set all with Matteo Berrettini in the final of Stuttgart, who is quite clearly in the top few grass-court players before I hurt my abs."
Murray plays with a metal hip after having surgery in 2019 following an injury which appeared to bring him close to retirement.
"I still want to win, I want to compete and see how hard I can push my body," said Murray.
"The operations I had, I was told I might be able to play again so I just want to see how far I can go."
The three-time Grand Slam winner will face either Yunchaokete Bu or Harry Wendelken in the second round.
Elsewhere on Monday at the Surbiton Cup, Ryan Peniston defeated Jiri Vesely of Czech Republic 6-4, 6-2.
There were also wins for Mark Whitehouse, Dan Cox, Billy Harris, Harry Wendelken and Britain's Isabelle Lacy, Maia Lumsden, and Emily Webley-Smith - meaning there will be 12 Brits in this year's main draw.
The 2023 Surbiton Cup will run until Sunday, 11th June. For all updates visit the link here.
