A WOMAN was taken to hospital after a fire broke out in a New Malden care home on Malden Road last night.

Firefighters were called to the home at around 11.40pm and rescued the woman via an internal staircase.

Part of a one-bedroom flat on the second floor of the building was damaged by the blaze.

The fire was brought under control by 0.57am this morning.

Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters from New Malden, Wimbledon and Surbiton fire stations were on the scene.

Investigators with the London Fire Brigade believe the fire was accidental and involved an extractor fan.
