Rachmaninov Vespers

Saturday 17 January, All Saints Church, Doors open at 7pm for 7.30pm start.

All Saints Church is located in the Ancient Market Place, Kingston, KT1 1JP (Image supplied)

We are blessed to have such an amazingly accomplished main choir at All Saints Kingston and this January, they will be performing the  masterpiece; "Rachmaninov's Vespers" (also known as the 'All-Night Vigil') as a fundraising event.

This is a haunting cornerstone of the choral repertoire. Rachmaninov uses the unaccompanied choir almost like an orchestra, with great colour and precision, although the work is very firmly founded in the Orthodox tradition and is largely based on Orthodox chant. The choir frequently divides into many parts, giving rise to complex and varied textures.

The vespers were composed and premiered in 1915, at a time of great turmoil in Russia. Sergei Rachmaninov had a deep and very personal religious faith, which he expresses beautifully through this unaccompanied set of choral vespers. They are separated into two parts: the evening Vespers and the morning Matins, both full of exquisitely rich harmonies.

Games Night - Streetfighter Tournament

Sunday 18 January, The Fighting Cocks, Doors open at 7pm.

The Fighting Cocks is hosting a streetfighter tournament-themed games night this weekend (Image supplied)

Hadouken meets headbanging. Time to Fight.

This is not a polite buttonmash in a silent room. This is Street Fighter under low lights, loud amps, and the smell of beer and victory. Whether you main Ryu's discipline, ChunLi's lightning, Guile's sonic boom, or Ken's reckless fire, this night is about execution, skill, and battle.

Heavy metal. Cold pints. Hot combos. – How could you say no?

Also, all the usual pokemon setup, beyblade tournament and of course some retro gaming – come and hang out or face the wrath of M Bison!
