Larry Achiampong: A Letter, A Pledge, Stanley Picker Gallery, 11am-5pm

Stanley Picker Fellow Larry Achiampong's solo show centres around two moving image works, processing the imprints of depression, inherited trauma, digital anxiety and Black Masculinity. He will also showcase games and furniture fabricated in the workshops of Kingston School of Art, modelled on Oware games and an original Asante stool which the artist's mother brought over from Ghana. Achiampong's films delicately unfurl the tensions of dislocation, lost kin and grief, while placing the visitors in an environment filled with sculptural elements and games as well as karate mats, reflecting on the Okinawan karate's 'hard-soft style'.

Underdark/Grief Ritual, The Fighting Cocks, 7:30pm

There's a lot going on in Underdark's sound. Beyond its raw, blackened core, there are elements of the post-metal of bands like Ulver or Enslaved, and the blackgaze of contemporaries like Deafheaven and Alcest. Dig deeper still, and there is much of the wry miserabilism of post-punk and, most strikingly, the energy and open-wound emotion of 2000s screamo. Ollie and fellow guitarist Adam Kinson spent most of their time making indie-pop before they started this band, and flickers of the ingenious melody of that world still bleed through. Indeed, descriptions of Underdark's sound over the years as 'Envy-meets-Emperor' or 'What Joy Division would sound like if they made black metal' aren't far off the mark.

Gulliver's Travels, Rose Theatre, 8pm

Adapted for the stage by Josh Mathieson, with music by Eamonn O'Dwyer; Directed by Pippa Dykes, Anthony Hoskyns, Alex Pritchett and Hannah Sands.

When Gulliver washes up on the shores of Lilliput, everything changes for the tiny island state. A giant among the tiny, Gulliver is a celebrity, foreigner, and potential weapon all at once. War with Blefuscu has been imminent ever since the Great Egg Rebellion. Now the Lilliputians must tame Gulliver before the enemy launches its fleet. Only young Demelza, Gulliver's tutor and adviser to the Emperor, can stop all-out war… This epic adventure is brought to you by the Rose Young Company.

Holocaust Memorial Day Commemoration, Kingston University Town House, 1:30-4pm

This is an important inter faith and community event that provides an opportunity to learn the lessons of the past, honour the experiences of people affected by the Holocaust and genocide, and challenge ourselves to work for a safer and fairer future. 'Fragility of Freedom' is the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2024.

The commemoration will be hosted by the Kingston Faith & Belief Forum, chaired by Rabbi Rene Pfertzel. The Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston, Councillor Diane White will be in attendance together with Deputy Mayor, Councillor Richard Thorpe. We are pleased to welcome Rahima Mahmut – an Uyghur artist and activist as our guest speaker. Rahima is the UK Project Director of the World Uyghur Congress and the chair of Stop Uyghur Genocide.
