Local non-profit The Community Brain is hosting three weekend festivals next month, starting with a sardine-themed celebration on Sunday, 5 May.

The Community Brain says the festival celebrates the reintroduction of sardines to the Thames in 2005 with entertainment, live music, and fresh street food throughout the day.

The headline of the festival is a colourful procession which takes attendees down to the Thames to watch a haul of sardines being brought in for the event's finale: a community barbecue.

The festival runs from 12pm to 5pm, starting at Claremont Gardens.

Local residents association BRaG is running a May Merrie event this weekend.

Burton Road in north Kingston will be closed for the festivities.

The association says the "free local family afternoon" will feature a bar stocking local Park Brewery beers, local singer group PieLarks, Morris dancing, chalk drawing, and various party games.

Celebrations start at 2pm at St Lukes Vicarage Garden.

Come and join us on one of Kingston Rowing Club's fun learn to row courses. Experience this amazing stretch of river whilst learning a new skill and making friends – no experience needed!

The club has courses for adults and juniors (12 to 18 years) starting in May and running through the Summer months.

It's a great way to get fit and try out a new sport or get back into a boat if you have rowed in a past life.

Courses start this weekend and continue on into summer.

Join Waterstones Kingston in-store for a signing with A. F. Steadman, author of the bestselling Skandar series, to celebrate the release of the next exciting installment; Skandar and the Chaos Trails.

Describing the book, Waterstones says: "Skandar and his sister Kenna are finally both at the Eyrie, but tensions are high. To survive their third year of training, Skandar and his friends must complete a series of terrifying trials across the Island's elemental zones.

"Friendships, allegiances and rider-unicorn bonds will be pushed to the limit – only the strongest will make it."

This is not a ticketed signing so arrive early to avoid disappointment.
