Two teenage boys, aged 16 and 14, have been charged with possession of a corrosive substance in a public place.

They are due to appear at Wimbledon Magistrate's Court today, Wednesday 2 December.

The boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were arrested at the scene on Friday, 29 November, after police officers were taken to hospital due to being exposed to a "corrosive substance" at Surbiton station.

Just before 4.30pm, British Transport Police officers were at Surbiton station when they spotted two teenagers, aged 14 and 16, acting suspiciously.

As the officers tried to speak to them, they were exposed to a substance believed to be alkaline.

Two of the officers were taken to hospital, but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life changing.

Seven other officers, including two from the Metropolitan Police, were checked by paramedics.

The boys were arrested on suspicion of carrying a corrosive substance and conspiracy to commit GBH (grievous bodily harm).

The 16-year-old was taken to hospital as a precaution.
