Taller towers with 272 homes could be built next to Unilever's new UK HQ in Kingston

Taller towers than previously approved could be built next to Unilever's new UK headquarters in Kingston.

Kingston Council already green-lit plans to build a 16-storey apartment building next to Eden Campus, in Kingston town centre, but developer Cube Real Estate now wants to build two taller towers on the site.

The developer said in consultation documents the updated proposals would work better for Kingston by replacing a single bulky building with two slimmer blocks.

It said the scheme would improve access to daylight and views for residents and provide homes that better met local needs.

The proposals would see former office building Lever House demolished for two apartment blocks, as part of the second phase of the Eden Campus development.

The buildings would have 272 co-living and affordable homes overall, along with coworking space and a café.

While the exact height of the proposed buildings has not been confirmed by the developer, sketches used to consult on the scheme show one block reaching up to 19 storeys tall and the other up to 13 storeys.

The co-living units would offer studio accommodation with shared kitchens, lounges, workspaces and outdoor areas for people who want to live close to their work and public transport, particularly the Eden Campus workforce.

The first phase of the development saw disused buildings demolished for two office buildings, one 10 storeys and the other eight storeys tall, and a multi-storey car park.

The site was set to become Unilever's global headquarters, but the firm confirmed it would only be moving into the eight-storey building, its new UK and Ireland base, after a review.

This is set to open in spring, while the other block is being sublet.

The council granted outline permission for the second phase of the scheme in 2021, which would have seen Lever House demolished for a 16-storey apartment block with 115 homes and a café.

But Cube Real Estate said in consultation documents the updated scheme would suit the area better.

The documents said: "Having worked on the design of the Eden Campus, our appointed architects, Darling Associates, have reworked previous plans to create a high-quality design that works better for Kingston, creating a gateway to the town centre.

"Situated close to both Kingston Old Town and Fairfield/Knights Park Conservation Areas, they replace the single tall, bulky building with two slimmer buildings, creating a cleaner townscape and balance across the site whilst respecting Kingston's heritage.

"The improved plans seek to improve on the existing permission, improving daylight and views, delivering usable space at ground level and enables a stronger setting for the Hogsmill River, while providing homes that meet local needs."

The online consultation on the plans is open until February 26.

Cube Real Estate will then finalise the scheme before submitting an application to the council, which would need to be approved to go ahead.

Cube Real Estate has been contacted for further comment.
