The Royal British Legion (RBL)'s Surbiton branch hosted  various services this morning to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory Over Japan (VJ) Day, which is today (Friday, 15 August).

VJ Day marks the end of World War II and when President Harry S. Truman announced that Japan had surrendered unconditionally.

As part of its commemorations RBL Surbiton started the day with a flag raising at its club on Hollyfield Road at 9am.

This was followed by a 10am church service at Surbiton Hill Methodist Church given by the church's Minister.

And at 11am, the club and various attendees, including firefighters from Surbiton Fire Station, gathered at the Surbiton War Memorial on Ewell Road for wreath laying.

Following this final service, attendees all headed over to the RBL Surbiton club for a buffet lunch and refreshments.

At the club's entrance, Surbiton RBL Stitch and Natter repurposed the knitted toppers it made for this year's Victory in Europe Day to commemorate VJ Day.
