Data has revealed London's worst railway stations for bike theft, with local stations topping the rankings.

A Freedom of Information data from British Transport Police (BTP), analysed by cycling insurance specialist Cycleplan, has uncovered the London stations where cyclists are most likely to return to find their bike gone.

Clapham Junction has been named London's worst railway station for bike theft, recording 27 stolen bikes between January and June 2026.

That's up from just seven during the same period last year, a 286% surge in just 12 months.

It's followed by Richmond, where thefts have more than doubled from eight to 19, while Waterloo has seen one of the capital's sharpest rises, with thefts more than tripling from five to 18.

The surge at some London stations comes despite an 11% fall in railway bike theft nationally, with 1,900 bikes stolen across Britain between January and June this year, down from 2,135 in the same period in 2025.

However, the insurance company said there is some "positive news" for cyclists as the proportion of cases ending in a charge or summons has doubled to 9% (up from 4.4%), while CCTV use in investigations has also risen from 6.5% to 10.1%.

Sean Carney, Chief Underwriting Officer at Cycleplan, commented: "Prevention remains one of the best ways for cyclists to protect their bikes.

"We'd encourage anyone leaving a bike at a station to use good-quality locks, secure the frame to a designated cycle stand and register their bike with a recognised cycle database.

"Train operators and station partners also have an important role to play in preventing and investigating cycle theft, including making effective use of CCTV and other available evidence."
