Surbiton pub named among the best in England

The Telegraph has released an expert guide to the 500 Best Pubs in England and a pub in Surbiton has been included.
Each pub included in the list has been chosen for their charming character, welcoming staff, rich history and – of course – award-winning beer, they represent the very best the country has to offer.
The Telegraph's expert, Will Hawkes, who created the guide, has been writing about pubs for decades, visiting thousands across England in his never-ending search for perfection, and each of the establishments on the list has been tried and tested.
Speaking of his methodology, Hawkes said that the most important things were atmosphere, cosiness and happiness, good beer (particularly cask ale), and 'a sense of place'.
The Surbiton pub that made the list is the Antelope on Maple Road.
Speaking about why the pub made the list, Hawkes wrote: "The Tardis-like Antelope is a real all-rounder, as renowned locally for its burgers as it is for its multitudinous beers on the bar.
"It stretches back a long way, to a sizeable outdoor space, on the other side of which is the Brewhouse, a function space that used to host the Big Smoke Brewery (now on the other side of Surrey).
"Notwithstanding Surbiton's historic reputation, this is a fairly chi-chi part of town , but the essentials are right: it's comfortable, clean and welcoming. There's a lot of beer on the bar too – maybe too much for Surbiton – but whenever I've been the cask ale has been excellent."
Hawkes is not wrong about the Antelope's supply of beer as the pub was included in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide 2025 back in October.
