A nursery in Kingston is now open for September registration.

Opened in September last year, Monkey Puzzle Kingston's provides high-quality childcare for children aged three months to five years.

Led by owner Vjollca, who also runs a successful setting in Monkey Puzzle Surbiton, the nursery benefits from experienced leadership and a strong commitment to early years development. With dedicated rooms tailored to each age group, Monkey Puzzle Kingston's is currently accepting applications across all its rooms.

When asked what makes her nursery unique Vjollca had this to say, "What really sets us apart is how we combine our facilities with a play-based approach in line with the EYFS framework to support every child's development. We have two large outdoor gardens, along with two age-appropriate soft play rooms which both support physical development in a safe environment. We observe each child closely and plan around their individual interests and needs, helping them progress confidently at their own pace. Our environment plays a key role in this — from sensory and creative exploration in our sand areas, to hands-on learning and independence-building through cooking in our preschool kitchen."

This new bespoke built nursery boasts 4 tailored rooms to each age group's needs and development.

The Baby Room, as the name suggests, is for babies aged three months to one year old and has its own kitchen, sleeping room with cots, sensory room, home area, with book and cosy corners.

And its Tweenies Room, made for children aged one to two, also has its own sleeping room with cots and play areas, as well as toilets "to encourage toilet training and give those who are already toilet trained the chance to use them", says Vjollca.

Vjollca also says, "Giving children their own areas to develop and learn is what is important. As much as they learn from us adults, children also learn a lot from each other. Even if one child does something like going to the toilet, it will promote their natural curiosity and prompt them to want to do the same, even at such an early age."

The Toddler's Room, which is for ages two to three, also has access to a sensory room, their own toilets, book corner, home play area and many other spaces for their tailored developments.

While the Preschool room for ages four to five has all of the above as well as a music room and dressing-up box.

Vjollca says, "What sets this pre-school room apart from others is its vast variety of activities and developments available. From the fully operational height appropriate kitchen which is used for baking and cooking, to the music area which has appropriately sized guitars, drums, keyboard and even a violin. I want our children to have every opportunity to develop and grow their interests and this is a perfect way to do it."

This room, along with all the rooms, has underfloor heating and air conditioning to keep temperature comfortable in all weathers and for all children.

The Kingston Nursery, which was carefully designed by Vjollca and built by her husband, boasts the two aforementioned spacious gardens each with their own sandpits, and 'Mud Kitchens' for the children to run around in and play.

Both gardens also have a sheltered area with cosy corners to allow the kids to spend time outside even when it is raining.

And in the nursery's waiting area, Vjollca had a TV installed, which details the daily activities for the various age groups so that parents can see what their kids have been up to that day when picking up the little ones.

Vjollca, who has worked in teaching for 17 years and moved on to preschool teaching after being a secondary school Maths teacher for ten years, told Nub News that her mission for both the Kingston and Surbiton nurseries is to help the children become "happy, confident, and independent by the time they leave".

She said: "Maths and Literacy at this stage is not everything, children are still learning about themselves about the world around them. However we do incorporate them both in every day activities and in our posters around the rooms. Instead of making our nursery a school, I want to help them best prepare for the transition to school and give their development the best chance possible".

"I want them to be happy when leaving us and confident enough to communicate their need for help at school or ask their friends to play, and be able to use the toilet independently.

"Being ready for school isn't about knowing how to do certain subjects; it's about the simple things like putting their own coats on, knowing how to express themselves and their feelings and being able to talk to their friends about their weekends."

"Safeguarding at both nurseries is a must," Vjollca said.

Thus, all the doors leading to the gardens are secure and doors to the main building are always locked, meaning that no one can get in without permission.

After opening in 2019, the Monkey Puzzle Surbiton Nursery has been a success and has cemented itself as part of the community, and Vjollca hopes to do the same with the Kingston nursery.

The owner says that the success of the Surbiton nursery stems from its "longstanding staff who give the children the confidence, attachment, and security that they need".

She added: "My staff have to be a team and I've got a strong team here."

There are many bilingualists in the nursery staff. Certain members of staff speak Cantonese, Russian, Romanian and even Albanian. The owner says that Monkey Puzzle Kingston is very supportive of children with English as a second language

"I want to create a diverse community here at Monkey Puzzle Kingston. Diversity is a strength and should be treated as such." Vjollca said.

To align with her diversity aims, Vjollca says that she aims to implement other languages into activities at the Kingston nursery like she does in the Surbiton nursery.

Monkey Puzzle Kingston also celebrates all festivals from different cultures while also keeping in line with British values.

Vjollca said: "We emphasise manners and inclusivity here. We try to ensure there is never any discrimination or anybody feeling left out. At meal time, the kids know that they cannot start eating until everyone is seated and we have said 'Bon appetit'."

Breakfast, lunch, tea, and two snacks are all included in the nursery's fees, and the nursery's healthy menu rotates every four weeks so children have the opportunity to try new things and get used to different foods from early on.

All meals are prepped and cooked on site, and puddings are always either fresh fruit or yoghurt, to further boost the idea of healthy eating.

"We make sure one of your five a day is included in every meal," Vjollca said.

The nursery also has a strong parent partnership by hosting 'stay and play' days during events such as Christmas, Halloween, and Mother's Day, wherein parents can spend the day at the nursery with their children.

The nursery also often has animals brought in for its celebrations. For example, it brought reindeer in at Christmas, and annually brings in chick eggs so the children can take care of them while they hatch.

Vjollca said: "For me this is not a business, it's a passion."

She added that she values maintaining relationships with families even after children leave the nursery, often keeping in touch with parents. Many families from the Surbiton setting have shared that their children continue to play together after moving on, reflecting the strong bonds formed during their time at nursery.

Vjollca also noted that parents frequently tell her their children leave feeling happy, confident, and well-prepared for the transition into school.

This, Vjollca said, "is very important and makes me happy. I don't want their friendships and growth to stop here, I want it to be a community which leads to friendships that last as long as possible."

As well as celebrating festivals and events, the nursery also has graduation parties to commemorate the end of their nursery life, and celebrate the next step into school for the children in pre-school.

Vjollca said: "Because not everybody will have the opportunity to go to university and have a graduation ceremony, we give our kids the chance to have a graduation party, aptly themed, based on something the kids have enjoyed that year and wear robes and sing a song. It's something for the children to look back on fondly."

In addition to curricular activities, the kids can participate in yoga and sports classes as well as storytelling sessions, and parents have the option to pay for extra curricular activities.

Additionally, as the nursery is located on Parkfields Road, close to Richmond Park, staff often take the children on outings to local parks and libraries.

The nursery also visits a care home on every last Friday of the month, offering the kids the chance to play and read with residents and one care home said that Monkey Puzzle Kingston's children were the most well-behaved that have visited, which Vjollca says makes her "the proudest".

Moreover, the nursery engages in charity work. For example, staff raised more than £1000 and took part in the recent breast cancer ribbon walk at Hampton Court.

"We want to set an example to the children, to highlight the importance of charity and helping others, so that they may implement that in their day-to- day lives," Vjollca said.
