Save The World Club to hold Hong Kong Cultural Day in Kingston
Save The World Club are holding the first of two events welcoming the Hong Kong community in Kingston on Monday 2 September.
They are welcoming the community to go and try Moon Cakes and celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival which is culturally significant to many oriental communities.
Moon Cakes are a traditional Cantonese recipe made from lotus paste.
Save The World Club encourages guests to bring any recipe they feel fondly of to share with others if willing. Guests are also encouraged to bring an item to the potluck to share.
Activities on the day include traditional Mid-autumn Festival Riddles, tutorials for folding paper lanterns, and karaoke.
The event is funded by The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise Sector Grants.
It will run from 1.pm-6.30pm at Save The World Club on 18 Southsea Road.
Save The World Club's Secretary General, Dr. Tariq Shabbeer said: "The reason it is important to link and understand the Hong Kong community is because they are one of the newest migrants to Kingston.
"We estimate that there are about 600 families or 1,500 individuals who have arrived since China had more control."
He continued: "They escaped to avoid being persecuted and Hong Kong has a long connection with the UK.
"Like all culltures, we want to welcome, understand and appreciate their culture and find ways to live in peace and prosperity as UK citizens.
"There is always an enormous culture shock in moving, so we see this as a way of building internal and external connections to tackle any issues and foster good growth and development through good food, culture, art and fun."
Book your tickets to the event here.
Save The World Club said: "If this is booked up or you don't book, don't worry, just come."
The club's second Hong Kong Cultural Day will be on 15 September.
