The Friends of Bushy and Home Parks have announced the return of a historic event in Bushy Park this May.

Known as Chestnut Sunday, the traditional family festival began in the late 1800s according to the community group's website, but was suspended during the COVID pandemic.

This modern iteration will honour its Victorian heritage by encouraging families to bring and enjoy picnics in the park.

The festival will include free music and a photo gallery of the park's wildlife alongside guided nature walks for all ages.

There will also be a special exhibition on Camp Griffiss, a World War II-era military base in the park that served as the European Headquarters for the American air force during D-Day.

In a recent Facebook post, the Royal Parks said that adults and children alike "are encouraged to wear fancy dress to add to the fun".

The Friends of Bushy and Home Park, who are now funding and organising the event, have said its return is "by popular demand" from the park's visitors.

Chestnut Sunday will take place Sunday 12 May from 12pm to 4pm between the Diana car park and children's playground in Bushy Park.
